Show and Tell at the Surrey Art Fair

Attending the Surrey Art Fair at the end of February was a new experience for me. It was daunting but also exciting. We took 2 days to travel from Nice to Surrey and two days back.
On the return journey we were lucky enough to be in front of 'The Beast from the East' storm all the way, although it was bitterly cold -9 degC at our overnight stop in Troyes. When we arrived home our garden was covered in about 2 inches of snow, with a part of the storm passing over the Alps and depositing snow in the PACA region. This is about a once in 10 - 15 year event but only lasts for a couple of days. Those of you who are used to very cold winters, will laugh at us wimps over here.

We spent a lot of time preparing for the hanging. I cleared a wall and used brown paper to get the general fell of the hand, and then the framed paintings, all the while on tenterhooks hoping the frames wouldn't get damaged. The preparation paid dividends when we got there as we knew exactly which painting went where with plenty of space where necessary.

The show went well with lots of interest and some purchases. I am doing it again towards the end of April.

Here are more images of the stand:

Most works are up on the website, but I have not been able to photograph them all get (computer problems once again!) They will gradually be added over the next couple of weeks.

I hope you are seeing signs of spring wherever you are in the Northern hemisphere. and your weather is warming up. Our daffodils are out and the tulips are going great guns.

New Work, New Year and New Venue

PASSAGE REVEALED
Mixed media
50x60cm (20"x24") on gallery wrapped canvas

The New Year has been a busy time in my studio. I have been busy painting away on a new series of work for an art fair at the end of February.

I seem to have a split personality as the new work falls into two camps - geometric and landscape based. The above painting is one of the more looser 'landscape' based ones and the one below definitely geometric.

Participating in an art fair is a new experience for me, and I am both excited and fearful at the same time. Let me know if you would like complimentary tickets. The venue is Sandown Racecourse, Esher Surrey (UK).

I am treating these two painting as a diptych at the moment. Time will tell if they will remain joined or go their separate ways.

Let me know if you think they should remain as a diptych or you can see them splitting up.

Intuitive Abstract - Escape Route

 Escape Route (5004)
by Marion Hedger
Part of the 'Connections' Series of Intuitive Abstracts

Making connections is a good thing but sometimes we just need to escape to somewhere quiet. From her 'Connections' series,  this intuitive painting by Marion Hedger captures our interactions in a busy world.

"This painting shows the busyness of everyday life, look closely and you can see lots of activity. At the same time there are escape routes away from all the activity"

Finished with a high gloss varnished and polished with wax to give a satin glow.

Framed in a black floating frame, it is ready to hang on arrival.

The overall framed size is 34x34cm and 3cm deep.

Work in Progress on the Easel

These two boards (40x40cm) are on my easel at the moment. My idea is for a diptych with overall dimensions of 40x80cm (16x32) so I am working on both of them together. Whether or not they remain a diptych only time will tell.

Unusual Tool for Mark Making

I like to work on a ground that has lots of suggestions of colours and some texture that will inform what happens next and help to build up the overall finished painting. I add lots of lovely layers of thick paint in different colours and scrape them back sometimes with a spatula, sometimes with sandpaper or steel wool and sometimes using the magic tool in the video.

New Abstract Series Published

My first series of intuitive abstracts, 'Connections' are all up and available on my website. Click on the image to view larger version on my site. I am still working on adding more to my abstract portfolio and I think I might be getting a bit obsessed with the proces. I love adding layers and scraping away to reveal previous colours.

Throw Away Boards

Throw Away board.
Or should I paint over it and continue with it?

Another concept introduce by Nicholas Wilton in the course is the Throw Away Board. Have a board by the side of you as you paint. Use it to wipe your brushes, try out ideas, put your palette paper over it (upside-down) at the end of the day - anything you fancy. Throw it away at the end, or maybe it might just turn into it's own painting.

Sticking with the texture and curves today, although I did start out with the intention of having verticals and no curves, and I'm back to my reds and oranges. It must be the cold snap we're having that I need to feel warm. Once again the painting evolved as I went along.

I scraped my palette clean and some large flakes of acrylic came away. I had the urge to stick one on the painting. Some teal paint on the palette from my previous painting popped through the flake and suggested the teal colour. And, as they say the rest is history. Can you spot the skins? There are actually two of them.
