This painting was no.13 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. I was quite happy when it was at this stage

But after looking at it for a couple of weeks the lower area of the wall and path needed more definition and the stem on the lhs really bothered me and I had to change it.

I covered the painting in liquin and let it sit for a few minutes to soften the paint surface so that the new paint would adhere better.

Next

• I darkened the wall by adding more purples and blues.
• I painted over that stem and put in a new shorter one more to the left and a  suggestion of another small geranium head to breach up the angle of the leaves.
• I altered the colours in the background removing that bright turquoise colour which was jarring
• I darkened some of the flowers and added highlights to others.

I think I prefer it much better now - what do you think?

This is a scene from Hanbury gardens. I realised I have given this painting the same title as one I painted two years ago for the 2014 challenge. I shall have to think of a new title.

I have been comparing the two paintings and the older painting is much warmer. This has made me think of warming up the shadows in today's painting. What do you think?

In this year's trip to the see the lavender we stayed in a small village called Banon. They had this lovely garden which was awash with hollyhocks and located up the hill wil a beautiful view. A peaceful place to sit and contemplate the view of the surrounding country side. See my previous post here.

Art Inspiration, Hollyhocks in Banon

This public garden was reached by a steep path up to the church at Banon here we stayed overnight on our recent trip. The climb was well worth it to find this garden area in full bloom. Not only was it colourful, but the benches were positioned to give a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside.

Many of the village in this area were full of hollyhocks which seemed to be self-seeded and growing in no soil!

I have painted a small painting of this garden and blocked in a larger one. I am working up to do it as a larger painting still.

The blue pergola this rose and the pink rose was built by my husband. It took quite some time to persuade him but I am so pleased they are built. They provide the perfect support and backdrop to the roses.

AbundantArtShow Day 2, share WIP and promote two other artists

I shared my work in progress of my climbing red roses for #the abundant art show. We were to share 2 to 3 pics of a current work in progress on 1 social media outlet and promote two artists in the challenge. I shared my WIP on Facebook but couldn't resist posting it here as well. I shall share the finished painting with you tomorrow. HINT it is already posted on Etsy so if you just can't wait have a look and tell me what you think. The two artists I promoted were Kristen O'Neill and Anita Nowinska.

I have been using Canva to create my collages. I find it takes a long time and is not really suitable for me and it is also not compatible with my tablet. I'm looking for new app that is quick for collages, picmonkey also has trouble with my android tablet - so if you know of one that works on both a pc and an android tablet let me know.

Today's Garden Inspiration - Red roses

And the Inspiration...

A climbing red rose.

These roses are beautifully formed and have such a wonderful scent.

St Paul, the area I live in, was renowned for its roses. Apparently the hillsides were all covered with rose nurseries and supplied the perfume trade in Grasse. It's surprising that they grow so well as roses are not normally associated with a Mediterranean climate due to the hot summers. We do have quite a bit of rain in April and often into May which probably bolsters them up for their moment of glory.

This is the outcome of yesterday's inspiration.

The joys of photshop elements !!! First it kept crashing. Then adjusting the colours UGH. It seems that you adjust one to get it just right and it throws the other colours off. My camera always seems to have trouble with the blues.  and in trying to adjust the photo the pink roses have lost there brightness.

Garden Art Photo Inspiration and WIP

April until June is the nicest time in my garden - first the daffodils start nodding their heads, quickly followed by the early irises and tulips. After tulips come the poppies and then the bearded irises. The colours range from the yellows of the daffs, the reds of the tulips and poppies, through to the purples and blues of the irises.

At the moment the pinks and reds in the form of climbing roses are taking center stage and I took these to images as my current painting inspiration.

The top image a teaser for the pink rose painting I am working on at the moment. It's nearly finished so all will be revealed tomorrow.

I look forward to spring as my garden awakes from its winter slumbers. Living in the South of France, I have lots of irises - that emblematic flower of Provence. One type was here when we moved into the house about 10 years ago. They have thin stems, stand about 3' tall and have pale flowers. Individually they are not as showy as the other varieties but when planted on mass the garden is covered in purple. Add to that the blue Ceanothus in the background -  Just wonderful to see.

Here's a pic from a few years ago when I transplanted some under our Magnolia. They are prolific and now they cover the whole area.

Every year the poppies self-seed all over my garden, particularly in the lawn. My husband, bless him, mows around these patches giving me a lovely display with high impact colour! These are growing around an old hibiscus syringa which is just starting to emerge after its winter rest.
