About this painting
This is an upcycled painting, also of poppies, that I sort of liked but it was a bit dark. I decided to redo the painting (the original one had 5 poppies which also made it a bit crowded). I first painted the highlights with cadmium yellow and then hit it with the red. The painting is now much brighter and livelier and has more impact.

More red and more tulips for day 23 in the challenge. I love this red colour, it is Scarlet Lake by Winsor and Newton. I like to use it straight from the tube for a luscious red colour. When mixed with white it gives a lovely soft peachy/pink colour.

About this painting
I find that reds can quickly lose their vibrancy when the paint dries. To help the red stay bright, I always underpaint with yellow.

Two ACEOs for today's post. These are taken from a monoprint in acrylic. I used too much paint for the monprint but I loved the effect of the texture on print. I was going to use the print as a basis for an abstract painting, however, when I placed my ACEO template over the print, these two ACEOs jumped out at me.

The red is bright in this - but not quite as bright as this shows. I altered it in Photoshop and got a pretty good approximation of the true colour, but it never seems to load up right - Oh well!

I did not use any true reds in the poppies, they are mainly a combination of Winsor and Newton scarlet (an orangey-red), yellow, permanent rose and alazarin crimson. In sunny areas I always use yellow underneath the red, as it always seems to make the reds 'pop'. Contrary to what logic tells you, I often find that red loses it's brightness if painting it on top of white.

Last week my escape from winter was the sunflowers of Provence. This week it is the poppies. I have completed four paintings in the last couple of days - admittedly small ones but it meant I could squeeze in some painting time.
They are all of the sameish? (is that a word!) scene as my larger painting "Scarlet Poppies".

I've just notice the three As in the title - a little unintended alliteration LOL

I felt like doing something a little different today and something where I could just use my paints with abandon. Working with the oranges, red and yellow really makes me feel happy. The inspiration for this one my previous painting
Autumn Explosion
Process
I started with a puple ground then some red dabs of paint, next I alternated with different orange hues and reds and lastly luscious cadmium yellow. After all the paint was more or less in place I used a palette knife to place the trees in position by laying the palette knife flat on the canvas and pulling it up through the paint.
Placing the trunks
The very last thing was to lay in the trunks with titanium white which I did with a sideways motion. The white paint picked up some of the colour already on the painting giving the illusion of bark. I tried hard to give the trunks different widths but maybe I should have made them much more different?

Day 9, 30 days hath September challenge

Day 9 painting
For day 9 of the challenge I am cheating a little. This is a larger landscape painting which I started a couple of weeks ago and finished on Friday - so strictly speaking I did paint some of it in September LOL.
Larger Format
This is much larger than my small landscapes and I really enjoyed painting this one. I'm fond of the small ones but this allowed me to get stuck into a painting as it has been a while since I did a larger one (apart from my Zorn palette study of course).

Some like it hot - still life in oils

This is another rework. Initially painted with a brush, I just couldn't get the effect I wanted. I left is aside for a while and last week I reworked it using impasto paint and a palette knife. Although not too bad before, the rework has added 'oomph'. There is something satisfying about reworking a painting, maybe it's because there is nothing to lose and the painting is no longer 'so precious' so there is more freedom to just go for it.

It will soon be time to go and see the lavender fields blooming. Along the way there are many hay meadows that are awash with colour. The poppies, in particular always call out to be painted. 

This is painted on a pink ground which is allowed to show through to add sparkle to the painting. Using the palette knife and thick impasto paint, allows the colours to remain true. Here is a close-up of some of the knife work

One of the pears from yesterday's still life was eaten for breakfast, so I made up the trio of fruits with an apple. It had similar colouring to the pears and was a good substitute. It can't understand why it is different though, and can't join in with the pears LOL.

This one turned out completely different to the others -  that's the beauty of this type of abstract and letting the 'feel' of the painting take charge. Sometimes the painting takes over and you just have to go with the flow.

Black, White and Red landscape abstract

This is the second painting for the September challenge on the Daily Painters International blog where I missed the deadline. This was an abstract landscape that sort of developed as I went along. I mixed the greys on the paper as I went along. Adding the red was a last minute decision.

The three black and white paintings in this series were done very loosely and quite quickly. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed creating them as I had no preconceived ideas and nothing to lose as they were an cardboard cutoffs. The tree is a nod to my location here in the Alpes Maritime, Provence.

Black and White plus one III

This is the third and final study in black and white plus one colour. This one is smaller than the other two and on canvas board with a black gesso ground.

This exercise was interesting and tells me that I definitely need to loosen up in my normal work and this is an idea I am thinking of taking further - maybe not the white and black theme but definitely the loose palette knife work and using the gel to thicken up the paint. As this was only an exercise I used paint which was very fluid and not true artist paint. I wasn't sure if the gel (Golden gel medium) would work to give me a 3D effect but it worked well.
