Another challenge within a challenge, this time from Evhe who posts painting challenge every two weeks. This one was to paint from one of her sunflower field photographs. I didn't take myself too seriously painting this and just went with the flow, not making any real decisions about composition and not planning anything. I had fun.

Hollyhock Village, Part 1 - Day 7, 30 paintings in 30 days

Hollyhock Village Part 1
Oil on gesso laminated wood panel
20x30 cm (8"x12")

During our recent lavender hunt, we came across a village which I shall call Hollyhock Village. Hollyhocks lined the streets, seemingly growing out of the concrete in the road. The roads were narrow enough, barely room for one car let alone a car and two rows of hollyhocks. I took heaps of photos both on the way there  (overcast day) and on the way back (nice sunny day).

Some photos of the hollyhocks

The village is Revest du Bion, Alpes-de-Haut Provence

About this painting

This painting is part 1 of a pair painted on gesso panel. I did not add any additional gesso to it as they are supposed to be ready to go. Not sure I will do that again! the surface is so slippy and I wasn't convinced the paint was adhering. I've never used Yuppo with watercolour but from what I have read, it seems that this surface is similar.
I used a brush mostly with just a bit of knife work on the wall to give it texture.

I will wait until the paint has dried a little and rework some of the hollyhocks for more impact.

Come back tomorrow to see the the companion piece.

Newsletter
I will be sending out my first newsletter at the end of the month. Sign up for my newsletter and you will be entered into a draw for one of my miniature treasures paintings.

About this painting
This is an upcycled painting, also of poppies, that I sort of liked but it was a bit dark. I decided to redo the painting (the original one had 5 poppies which also made it a bit crowded). I first painted the highlights with cadmium yellow and then hit it with the red. The painting is now much brighter and livelier and has more impact.

More red and more tulips for day 23 in the challenge. I love this red colour, it is Scarlet Lake by Winsor and Newton. I like to use it straight from the tube for a luscious red colour. When mixed with white it gives a lovely soft peachy/pink colour.
See yesterday's tulip painting here

About this painting
I find that reds can quickly lose their vibrancy when the paint dries. To help the red stay bright, I always underpaint with yellow.

This painting is painted with thick impasto paint on a yellow ground. It's funny how an idea can spark off several paintings, especially when I have been procrastinating for so long about using these small canvasses. That's one of the good things about participating in a challenge like this, it makes you think outside of the box.

INSPIRATION FOR THIS PAINTING
Like yesterday's painting, this on was also inspired by the flower in painting No. 17.

This painting was inspired by the crop of the flowers in yesterday's painting.

I have had these 4"x4" canvases sitting around for a long time and never knew what to paint. When I saw the crop yesterday, it spoke to me and voila!

Stay tuned for another mini treasure tomorrow.

Ikebana 4 - Burnt Orange Chrysanthemums
Oil on canvas panel

Palette knife painting

I have just returned from spending the holidays with my family in the UK. I thought I might be able to pull something together tonight, but as usual for this time of year I have picked up a virus and I am feeling sorry for myself. So I am cheating and posting this chrysanthemum still life painting that was part of the November Wetcanvas.com floral and botanical forum challenge. It does fit, more or less, into the challenge to my self this month, to push my painting style further.

Contact me about my paintings HERE

Here are three of the paintings in my Ikebana quartet. Pop over to my floral art blog to see the original posts.

I have reworked No.2 and will post that when the weather allows, we are have constant rain at the moment and more storms are forecast - but shouldn't moan as this does not happen very often.

I have also painted two rose still lifes in the same style and will post them later.

Back to landscapes
I enjoyed this break painting florals, but today I am back at the landscapes. I have someone interested in a larger painting of the lavender fields. Scarlet Poppies was my only large painting of Provence, and although I bought the canvasses about 6 months ago, I have not got around to using them.

Ikebana 1 - pink chrysanthemums

Ikebana 1 - Pink Chrysanthemums
22x27cm (approx  9"x11")
oil on canvas board
Palette knife painting

I've taken a break from painting landscapes for the last couple of dates to paint some floral still lifes.

This is inspired by a book on Ikebana given to me by a neighbour, the monthly floral forum challenge on wetcanvas.com to paint chrysanthemums and my imagination. I wanted to achieve an ethereal 'look' in this painting.

I have completed four paintings for the challenge and will post more tomorrow.

White Ice Iris painting in oils

I still haven't got around to cataloguing my paintings so far, so not sure which number I am up to.

The next two paintings are of white bearded irises, which is one of my favourite flowers. It is very majestic when it blooms.
