Golden Light Provence Landscape Painting

Golden Light
Provence landscape painting
18x24cm (approx 7x10)
oil on MDF canvas panel

Imaging walking in the evening glow of the sun on this peaceful path in the foothills to the alps.

About this painting
This is an older painting which I reworked to adjust some of the colouring.

I covered the painting with a thick layer of wax mixed with liquin and then liberally applied more paint into the layer. It is a fine balance of how much paint and pressure to use on the palette knife. The wax/liquin mix is quite slippy and the paint has to be thick enough to 'stick' but the mix holds the texture of the applied stroke. It also discourages fiddling with the stroke as that just wipes it off again.

Here is the old version, have I improved it? There is always something lost as well as gained when reworking a painting. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Seascape - Sunset Rocks Commission

Sunset Rocks
Oil on box canvas, 6"x8"

This is a sister painting for a client who bought the original painting. He requested two more paintings in different light. I painted 3 paintings all of which he likes and I will wait to see which ones he'll purchase.

Perfect Start skyscape, palette knife painting

Perfect Start skyscape
Palette knife painting in oils
40x50 (18"x20") on narrow gallery wrapped canvas

Another beautiful start to the day.

We have had such a lot of rain this month, and several grey days with severe flooding in many areas. November is the rainiest month, but we've had more than our fair share. This painting reminds me what it was like before the rain set in!

This is the view that has been greeting me for the past couple of mornings as I raise my bedroom blind. What a glorious way to be woken up in the morning. It really lifts the spirit - even before I've had my first cup of coffee!

Camargue Duo Sunrise and Sunset oil paintings

Camargue Duo Sunrise and Sunset
Each painting - 18x24cm oil on canvas panel
Painted with a palette knife

These two paintings show the difference between the sunrise and sunset over the Camargue marshland. The flamingoes just had a touch of pink, do they change colour with the seasons?

Camargue Sunrise palette knife painting in oil

Camargue Sunrise with flamingoes
18x24cm oil on MDF canvas panel
Painted with a palette knife

Last year we took a trip around the Arles area and on the way home stopped off at the Carmague a wetland area to the west of Marseilles.
We saw lots of flamingoes, egrets, black bulls and the obligatory white horses.
This is the first of my Camargue paintings and I plan to do several more. It's quite an interesting mix of the flat pools of marshy waters with the choppy waters of the Med as a backdrop.
