This painting is on its way to Virginia in the US. Thank you Leslie.

For years I was puzzled why many lavender fields in the Alpes-de-Haut-Provence seem to be left to go 'wild', It's such a contrast to the normally neat rows of lavenders that seem to carry on for miles. This year I found out. It is not that they are abandoned, but because they are grown ecologically with no herbicides. This makes for a much more interesting subject to paint, with the wild flowers popping up through the lavender and adding variety.

Poppy field in Haut-Alpes Provence

Meander through the Poppy fields
Oil palette knife painting
24x30cm on canvas panel (approx 11"x12"

Yesterday I went on my annual pilgrimage to see the lavender fields in the Haut-Alpes. Some of the lavender was not quite in full flower but other fields were more advanced. Everything seems to be late, the sunflowers were still small and no where near ready to flower.

I came across a beautiful poppy field which was lucky as the farmer was in the adjacent field mowing his hay.
The painting above was painted from one of last years photos. Stay tuned for the new paintings from the latest batch of photos.
I shall post a few photos of the lavender fields tomorrow.

Into the distance, 6"x6" Landscape painting

I
Into the distance, Landscape painting
15x15cm (6"x6") oil on canvas panel
Palette knife on a pink ground
The second of my mini trials. This time I used an underpainting using cool colours for the dark tones and warm colours for the lights. Again everything is suggested. Unfortunately, and I left a lot of the underpainting showing.

Unfortunately, the photo shows the purple as quite light - I will have to try to get a photo with a truer colour.

Here are the two paintings side by side
Which one do you prefer?

These small sized paintings are great for trying different things. They are large enough to give a good effect and small enough to quickly complete. I painted three of the same scene trying different techniques. This one is painted with a palette knife and painted onto a coloured ground of cool colours for the darks and warm colours for the lights. I also wanted to work on my tree technique - trying not to be too detailed but with enough information. I also just wanted to suggest the foreground. I quite like the result where everything is just suggested, leaving much to the viewers imagination.

I will post the other two over the next couple of days.
