Mountain Landscape - Day 15, 30 paintings in 30 days

Mountain Stretch
Palette knife oil painting
7cm x 30cm on loose canvas (approx 3"x12")
from a photo on PMP (Paint my Photo) "Innominate Tarn" by Gary Jones
NFS

See yesterday's painting HERE

This is a challenge within a challenge. PMP is a site that offers royalty free photographs to paint from. Each month they have a challenge from a selection of their photos. This months challenge was Mountains. The catch is that the painting has to be in a 4.25:1 ratio, so the winning photo can be used as a masthead.

Oh my, will I never learn! This was quite a challenge and I didn't do myself any favours painting so small. Not sure if this is a keeper. I will sit and stare at it for a while.

 About this painting
I have a pad of cotton primed canvas sheets from Belle Arti in Italy. They are the perfect support for trying out different things. They are inexpensive, so if  doesn't work out, not a lot of money is lost. If it is a keeper, shipping is inexpensive, and they can be mounted onto panel as an alternative.

I've not mounted these on panel yet, but I shall have a try this afternoon and report back on how it went.

Day 9, 30 days hath September challenge
Day 9 painting
For day 9 of the challenge I am cheating a little. This is a larger landscape painting which I started a couple of weeks ago and finished on Friday - so strictly speaking I did paint some of it in September LOL.
Larger Format
This is much larger than my small landscapes and I really enjoyed painting this one. I'm fond of the small ones but this allowed me to get stuck into a painting as it has been a while since I did a larger one (apart from my Zorn palette study of course).
Small Poppy Painting
Here is one of my smaller poppy landscapes for comparison

July 2013 Lavender fields trip

Lavender Farm in Provence by Marion Hedger
Oil on box canvas
15 x 20 cm (6" x 8") painted with a palette knife
FOR SALE VIA MY DPW STORE HERE

Here are a couple of photos from Monday's trip

Some of the lavender was not quite in full bloom, everything seems to be late this year as we have had lots of rain and the it's been relatively cool. I also managed to get some photos of abandoned and dilapidated buildings/barns so expect to see some of these in future paintings.

Into the distance, 6"x6" Landscape painting

I
Into the distance, Landscape painting
15x15cm (6"x6") oil on canvas panel
Palette knife on a pink ground
The second of my mini trials. This time I used an underpainting using cool colours for the dark tones and warm colours for the lights. Again everything is suggested. Unfortunately, and I left a lot of the underpainting showing.

Unfortunately, the photo shows the purple as quite light - I will have to try to get a photo with a truer colour.

Here are the two paintings side by side
Which one do you prefer?

Meandering Path, palette knife painting in oils

These small sized paintings are great for trying different things. They are large enough to give a good effect and small enough to quickly complete. I painted three of the same scene trying different techniques. This one is painted with a palette knife and painted onto a coloured ground of cool colours for the darks and warm colours for the lights. I also wanted to work on my tree technique - trying not to be too detailed but with enough information. I also just wanted to suggest the foreground. I quite like the result where everything is just suggested, leaving much to the viewers imagination.

I will post the other two over the next couple of days.

Provence Landscape Knife Painting #2 in oils

Provence Landscape Knife Painting #2
Oil painting by Marion Hedger
Oil on board, 20x15cm (8"x6")
 THIS PAINTING IS NOW SOLD
The second in the set of four small landscapes featuring the scenery of Provence, France and showing the vinyards, fields and distant mountains.

The landscape is painted from some of my photos taken on a trip to the lavender fields last year and is a compilation from serveral photos. I wanted a loose lively feel to these small landscapes to show the brilliant colours before the mid-day sun bleached out all the colours.
