Deconstruction - abstract painting in turquoise, peach and purple

Deconstruction
Abstract in turquoise, peach and purple
palette knife painting
Oil on MDF panel
15x15cm (6x6inch)
Available by auction on Daily Paintworks

This little abstract started life as left over paint. Using my palette knife I laid in the left-over paint in large blocks. I put it aside for a while and yesterday I noticed it again and I was drawn to it and this idea of girders/construction site came to my mind. Needless to say, I had more left over paint when I had finished.

Being abstract it will look good any which way - which way would you choose?

About this painting
This painted was started a while ago with some left-over paint and I left it quite unfinished. It resurfaced yesterday and I decided to have another stab at it. I wanted an abstract feel, so I lost some of the original tulips (there were a lot of them) and made the remaining ones larger. But, they still looked a little too realistic and I felt myself tightening up.

Knowing that I would finish up with realism if I kept on, I decided to do something drastic.!. I got out a large palette knife and scraped over the whole surface to lose the definition. I was starting to like it better. I continued applying paint and scraping back in some places. I am now calling it done.
It certainly is colourful - an antidote to today's grey and rainy day.

I shall take a better photo tomorrow when the rain stops and I can go outside to take one without the glare.

ACEOs 4 and 5 - 'Storm' acrylic monoprint, Day 11 of 30 day challenge

 ACEO 4 - Storm 1 Monoprint
Acrylic on watercolour paper
Available for purchase
ACEO 5 - Storm 2 Monoprint
Acrylic on watercolour paper
 Available for purchase
Two ACEOs for today's post. These are taken from a monoprint in acrylic. I used too much paint for the monprint but I loved the effect of the texture on print. I was going to use the print as a basis for an abstract painting, however, when I placed my ACEO template over the print, these two ACEOs jumped out at me.

Day 6, 30 paintings in 30 days January 2014 challenge

ACEO 3 - Abstract 1 miniature art
2.25x3.25 inch
Acrylic monoprint on 300g watercolour paper

Available for purchase 12€, including postage

In December I had a brief foray into monoprinting, something I had never tried before. It wasn't very successful as I didn't really know what to do. I used acrylic on a piece of glass and mixed the paint about making marks using a stick for some of the prints. Some were more successful than other, but I need to work more on the thickness of the paint and the type of paper.

On some I obviously used too much paint resulting in 'ridges' on the print. On a second look, I felt these ridges gave some nice textures. I took out my ACEO template out and placed it over the monoprint in various places. The results were surprising, with some really nice compositions appearing. You can guess what happened next - so be prepared to see more of these monoprint ACEOs.

Abandon, Autumn Abstract - Day 26, 30 days hath September, oil, 9x12 inch

Abandon, Autumn Abstract
23x30x1.5cm (approx 9"x12"x0.6")
Oil on box canvas, palette knife painting
 110€ International shipping included

I've just notice the three As in the title - a little unintended alliteration LOL

I felt like doing something a little different today and something where I could just use my paints with abandon. Working with the oranges, red and yellow really makes me feel happy. The inspiration for this one my previous painting
Autumn Explosion
Process
I started with a puple ground then some red dabs of paint, next I alternated with different orange hues and reds and lastly luscious cadmium yellow. After all the paint was more or less in place I used a palette knife to place the trees in position by laying the palette knife flat on the canvas and pulling it up through the paint.
Placing the trunks
The very last thing was to lay in the trunks with titanium white which I did with a sideways motion. The white paint picked up some of the colour already on the painting giving the illusion of bark. I tried hard to give the trunks different widths but maybe I should have made them much more different?

Provence Poppy Meadow Series Montage

A montage of some of the Poppy Meadows of Provence

I thought it would be nice to see some of this series together. It makes an interesting montage and shows how the same subject can be treated slightly differently to give a different look and feel. These are all small paintings some are 15x20cm and 18x24cm and all are painted with a palette knife. They can be both frustrating and fun to paint at the same time. The freedom with using the palette knife stops the fussiness that sometimes creeps into my landscape paintings, but getting the sense of distance and perspective is a challenge.

Fracture Abstraction No 6, varnished watercolor

"Fracture Abstraction No 6." Varnished watercolour abstract.
Painting size = 9.5 x 17.5cm (approx. 4"x7")
Overall size = approx 13.5 x 21cm (approx 5"x8")
Initialed on the front, signed on the back
Can be framed without glass
This one turned out completely different to the others -  that's the beauty of this type of abstract and letting the 'feel' of the painting take charge. Sometimes the painting takes over and you just have to go with the flow.

Fracture Abstraction No.4 and No.5, watercolour abstracts

Another two of this set

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that no. 3 is missing. The photo did not turn out very well on that one and I need to take another when the weather brightens up.

Fracture Abstraction No.2, watercolour abstract

"Fracture Abstraction No 2." Varnished watercolour abstract.
Painting size = 9.5 x 17.5cm (approx. 4"x7")
Overall size = approx 13.5 x 21cm (approx 5"x8")
Varnished
Initialed on the front, signed on the back

The second in my abstract watercolors.
In the spirit of play and creativity, I let watercolour washes merge together and then using pen, I enhance the shapes and used a bit of my artist's licence to extend and colour some areas. A white border has been left around the edge to enhance the colours. I have stressed the edges to give a bit of a handmade paper look, but this can be trimmed straight. I am enjoying myself with the freedom this brings. Hopefully, I can carry this forward in my more structured paintings.

This shows the 'stressed' edges.

I have taken a break from oil painting for a couple of days and decided to do something different and try to stimulate my imagination.

These have given me the idea of doing a series with limited colour combination maybe red and yellow, blue and green and so on.

A different view of the landscape to give the impression of birch trees. I started this in the same way as the previous two to give the background colours. Then  using thick gouache and a flat brush, I criss crossed the different colours to give an impression of  autumn woodland. After this had dried, - and that is the beauty of gouache it dries almost instantly - I used another flat brush to wipe away the paint for the tree trunk impressions and then worked back into the silhouettes left with grey and white to give the tree trunk markings. I finished off with the twig squiggles.
