After my recent trip to the lavender and sunflower area I had the impetus to finish some paintings started last year. The sunflowers were much smaller and blooming later than normal and did not give their usual showy display. Luckily, I have the photos from last year to remind me. Often the sunflowers are way ahead of the lavender, but probably because of our cold spring this year they will need another couple of weeks. Maybe a good excuse to go on another trip.

About this painting

Another re-invigoragated painting by painting into a wax and liquin mixture like yesterday's painting.

Another challenge within a challenge, this time from Evhe who posts painting challenge every two weeks. This one was to paint from one of her sunflower field photographs. I didn't take myself too seriously painting this and just went with the flow, not making any real decisions about composition and not planning anything. I had fun.

I am taking part in another 30 painting in 30 days challenge hosted by Leslie Saeta.
Once again my paintings will be landscapes and florals. First off the easel is a floral painting of white roses, see here.

I am still trying to decide what to paint for tomorrow. I was hoping to be more organised and have my subjects all worked out, but life, as they say, go in the way. It was lovely though to spend lots of time with my family who were over here for their August holidays.

Take time out to Play

At the beginning of the week I was running out of ideas of what to paint and I was questioning my use of oils. I wanted to do something less representational than my normal work and had a hankering to create abstracts. 

I spent two days playing around with mono-prints as well as ink and gouache resist. I had never done either and I didn't quite know the techniques, so I read up on them and off I went!

I didn't produce anything worthy, but I had a really good time. Since then I have been re-energised. I have finished several small paintings, have plenty of good ideas milling around and I have finished my larger painting I posted last week (keep tuned tomorrow to see it).

Conclusion

This is a scene I return to when I want something nice and sunny to paint. It always makes me smile to imagine those sunflowers bobbing away. These sunflower fields are adjacent to the lavender fields and the contrast of the yellow to the lavender is truly a feast for the eyes

We've had a long period of rain, so to give myself a lift, I painted another painting of the sunflower fields. This has a slightly different feel to the first Sunshine in Provence paintings. (see HERE). It is not quite as textured as the previous two.

Again painted with a palette knife to keep it loose and lively.

A sister painting to the one posted yesterday but with a more distant view, from the batch of photos taken while on a photo shoot of the lavender fields near Valensole. Scattered amongst the lavender fields were fields of sunflowers, quite a contrast to all the lavender elsewhere.

This was painted using a palette knife and has an impasto texture.

I love the purple and yellow ochre colours of the provence landscape in July. The lavender and sunflower fields with a backdrop of the mountains are made to be painted. I have deliberately kept this loose with no real detail to try to capture the overall feel of the countryside.
