Lyon Contemporary Art Fair Stand

Last week end saw me at the Art3f Lyon Contemporary Art Fair with my largest painting to date taking pride of place.

It's so hard to photograph the stand as it is 3metres deep and hard to get a good vantage point to photograph the walls properly. At the English art fairs I am used to having a longer stand where the side walls are 1m or 1.5meters long which I find is a much better way to display the art. But the smallest art3f stands are 3x3m. I feel it discourages visitors to enter the stand as, although there is 9 linear metres of wall space, it feels quite enclosed.

I have another art fair at Marseille the weekend after next, with the same stand layout so I will have to get used to it LOL. If you are in the area and would like tickets. Contact me

These vineyards produce the delicious Provence Rosé the area is famous for. I painted these vineyards in the autumn last year after the harvest

This is the outcome of yesterday's inspiration.

The joys of photshop elements !!! First it kept crashing. Then adjusting the colours UGH. It seems that you adjust one to get it just right and it throws the other colours off. My camera always seems to have trouble with the blues.  and in trying to adjust the photo the pink roses have lost there brightness.

I have finished my commission and I am giving it a good dose of  looking at to pick up any changes needed to call it finished. After completing it, I was in the mood for some florals, and following on from my Namibia Impressions I tried an abstracted floral. I so enjoyed painting this that I have created a mini series of them in different sizes which I shall post over the next week or so.

About this painting.
I had a tube of Winsor and Newton liquin impasto gel purchased well over a year ago and never used. I watched a couple of  You Tube videos on how to use it as I wasn't sure of the proportions. The advice varied a lot from not more than 20% to as much as you want to achieve transparency. My feeling is that 20% would be about right as I wonder about the binding of the paint with more than this.

I mixed several piles of paint, a light cream, light pink, and light blue and added a very scientific measurement of a  'dollop' of the gel to each pile. It mixed in very easily but didn't seem to bulk up the paint immediately although after a few minutes the paint became quite. stiff.

Using a palette knife I laid the paint in random patches on the canvas. I then mixed the colours for the flowers and using irregular shapes added the flowers. Finally I finished off with ivory black at the bottom and some blue/purple. The bright blue patches indicate the light bouncing about.

I am unsure if you can use the impasto gel over paint that doesn't have it in. Does anyone know the answer to this?

Apologies for my absence from blogging. Summer is a hiatus for me where painting is concerned as we have lots of visitors and my granddaughter comes to stay. Add to that, builders at the beginning of summer and maybe you will forgive me.

About this painting
A small stream near home that turns into a raging river after storms and when the ice in the mountains melt. The level can rise by about 4 metres. It is so hard to photograph the blues and turquoises to give the true colours of the painting, but it looks better in real life.

The stones featured in the painting are the remnants of a Roman Fort. This area of France was ruled by the Romans who built forts and Colosseums all over the place e.g. Arles, Nimes and Frejus. These remains are up the side of one of the mountains and can be reached after an arduous trek up hill (for me anyway!). The site is overgrown now and is quite shady, but when the light hits the trees the place lights up.

About this painting
I worked at keeping the colour clean and used an orange/yellow to counteract the greens and add a bit of 'zing'. I hope you agree that it worked quite well.

Back to my beloved lavender scenes. I was getting purple withdrawal symptoms!

Painted from photos of the Valensol plateau which is awash with purple in the summer.

About this painting
This painting includes a version of the trees I was sketching previously see here. My husband commented the other day that my lavender paintings always look like you are looking down on them. Well that's right! The best vantage point to take the photos from is the verge which is usually higher than the road and gives more of a view and raises the horizon line.

I used a pink ground here and allowed it to poke through in places. The finishing touch was splattering paint over the foreground.

This is a river at Castellane a small town on the way to the Verdon Gorges. The river is fast flowing and icy cold, with bluey-green water.

The colours are over-saturated. Oh the joys of photography! Although I have manipulated the colours in Photoshop, the uploaded photo is another story. One thing that springs out is my lack of variation in the colours between the foreground and distance. These challenges are good for picking up on areas for improvement, and even though it is a small painting, the changes in tone still need to be there.

Can you guess I love painting this meadow. This is my third painting, and probably not my last. I cheated (sorry, I mean used my artistic license)  a little with this one by replacing the distant vineyard with an olive grove.

After the long summer holidays the beaches on the Riviera are much quieter and it is then the 'wrinkly season' (I'm allowed as I'm in that category myself!) The older generation take the opportunity to soak up the sun and relax. The sun is much kinder and not so fierce in September.

About this painting
An unusual subject for me but I couldn't resist this group of woman enjoying the sun at Freyjus beach. Once again, possibly a subject for a larger painting as there is too much detail and I had to stop myself fussing.
It was mid-day when I took the photo so the shadows were small. I wondered if I should have elongated the shadows for a better composition.
